sunny and warm weather. we will take that into february 1st. a little chilly out there but high pressure says i'm hanging around for awhile. if you enjoyed yesterday, they will be the same. traffic is doing pretty well around the bay area. let's go right to the pictures and show you the traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving on interstate 880 in oakland. also the morning commute in san francisco northbound 101 that looks good getting up to the 80 split. it is 4:29 let's go back to the desk. sal, thank you. over night news several people are without power after a string of fires in oakland. ktvu channel 2 reporter claudine wong is live in the neighborhood where it happened with more on why firefighters are calling it suspicious. claudine. >> reporter: this investigation under way at this hour. firefighters told me 40 people in the dark for a fire early this morning. you can see there is nothing left of these two here. there is only is a couple of

them here. there is a couple more down the street. if you want to know how hot it pushed, take a look at this car. it just melted the side of the vehicle. this all started at 2:00 this morning. i want to show you video we shot a little bit earlier. if i talk to the lieutenant this morning from the oakland fire department he says they got a call about 2:00. residents in a nearby apartment building started getting smoke into their apartment so they called 911. when firefighters got on the scene the flames were shooting 30 feet in the air. fur of these trees were on fire. some of the cars parked next to them were also starting to burn. there was a power line down in the middle of the street. they got everything out. their fire investigator was out here this morning as well. he spent 45 minutes out here and just got to the department to start his investigation. they aren't sure how it started but at this point they say it does look very suspicious. they think that fire helped

knock down the power line. we tried to get ahold of pg&e but firefighters are estimating it will be four hours before they get the power back on. there are not pg&e crews on scene right now. certainly it will be a long morning. the investigation under way. oakland police were out here. this all looks very suspicious to them. live in oakland claudine wong. >> we are now just two days from the super bowl. and in two hours whether hear from 49er coach jim harbaugh and his brother john harbaugh in a special news conference. topics will include family upbringing as well as sharing the same practice facility right now. jim harbaugh stood next to colin kaepernick as the team went through drills. they called the 100 minute practice the best of the season. the 49ers are under a new cloud of controversy. the team hoped to move past the

antigay remarks of one player. however as ktvu tara moriarty tells us, two more players are now caught in the gay rights issue. >> two of the players who made the video at first denied ever making it. >> set goals for yourself. look forward to the future and it will get better. >> reporter: they told usa today reporter that they did not realize that the aim of the video was to fight bullying among lesbian, gay, and bisexual teens. now that video has been pulled. brook said i didn't make any video. this is america if someone wants to be gay it's their right. when his memory was finally jarred he said it was an antibullying video but not a

identifying two people killed as embassy security guards. we will continue to follow the situation and bring you updates this morning. today oakland city leaders will introduce a first in the country. it is both an id card and a debit card. supporters say the cards will help low income and immigrants who often don't have access to bank accounts and have to rely on costly check cashers. critics fear users could be targets of fraud because the cards are inscribed with personal information. a lost or stolen card could give thieves the information they need to drain a bank account. for the first time in california cease history latinos will out number whites. latinos will make up 39% of california's population by this summer. that will be equal to the number of right. by 2010 latinos will be the largest ethnic group at 41%. whites will make up 37%. a used car dealer in the south bay is due in court accused of swindling dozens of

customers. some old office furniture is left outside. the used car lot abruptly closed seven weeks ago and now we are learning the owner is accused of swindling more than 40 people out of their cars and money through an elaborate scam. >> any idea how he was able to operate? >> no. that is all part of the investigation. whether he took money from one vehicle to keep another person satisfied we are not sure. >> police arrested owner ameen wisal. the 50-year-old went by the native name andy paul. he faces up to six years in prison if convicted. independent monitor says the department has taken a big step back ward in the past year. the report specifically cites the police response to oakland fight.

the federal government could take over the police department if oakland police does not comply with the court order reforms. that same report found two oakland police officers pointed their guns at a sleeping 19- month-old child. that happened last summer on market street while the officers were serving a search warrant in a misdemeanor drug case. they had their guns drawn for their own protection. former new york city mayor ed cover died this morning. he earned a national reputation when he walked the streets of new york and asked people how am i doing? he didn't seem to care how or if he answered. he was 88 years old. funeral services are planned for monday in manhattan. john kerry will be sworn in as the next secretary of state later today.

before starting his new job he made a farewell tour across massachusetts. he wanted to thank the people who he represented in the senate for 29 years. hillary clinton will give her farewell speech to the state department this afternoon on her last day of secretary of state. clinton gave her last public speech before the council on foreign relations. in her remarks she called equal rights for women the unfinished business of the 21st century. in her four years of secretary of state clinton traveled nearly a million miles. time is 4:37. in less than an hour the government releases its january jobs report. most analysts expect to hear job growth remain relatively steady with 160,000 new jobs created. that will keep the unplace of employment rate at 7.1%. there are few that expect slightly better numbers and see the jobless rate slip to 7.7%.

pattern. a few high clouds showing themselves might drift in over the weekend. no big deal. next sign of rain next thursday and friday. it looks like a colder system than a rainy system. highs today upper 60s and 70s. sunny and warm again today after some morning fog. then mostly sunny. i think we will see a little bit more fog. hazy skies. over all, you can see everything rides up and over. january just carries into the first couple days of february. 30s and 40s on the temps. really not much has changed. dew points amount of moisture in the air has gone up. results sunny and warm again. chilly start with some of that fog. it will be another nice afternoon. a little bit of an offshore breeze. 60s to near 70 degrees on the temps. fog, sun, hazy right into saturday. a lot of high clouds on sunday into early monday. no big changes until the end of next week. >> thank you.

good morning. a little bit of patchy fog. maybe a little bit more than what we saw yesterday. highs in the mid to upper 60s. an alaska airlines jet force forced to make an emergency landing after its pilot lost consciousness. the co-pilot took over the controls and safely landed the plane in portland. it was originally bound for seattle. the airline says the pilot passed out somewhere over oregon. paramedics rushed him to the hospital as soon as the plane landed. today marks ten years since the space shuttle columbia disaster. they will be remembered in nasa

ames this morning. she was a mission specialist on challengers final flight which had prepared for their mission. will there be a separate mission to remember them. 25 people are dead more than 100 injured after an explosion at mexico state owned oil company headquarters. the explosion happened yesterday sending hundreds of people running into the streets. the explosion started in the basement and heavily damaged three floors of that building where several thousand people were. crews will be digging through debris to search for anyone who may have been trapped. in alabama hostage negotiators continue to communicate with a man who is holding a young boy captive. the man and boy have been in an under ground bunker since tuesday. the man snatched the boy off a school bus since fatally shooting the driver.

the fbi has evidence suggesting the shooting was a hate crime. at midnight labor contracts expired for union employees. university proposal calls for union members to contribute more into their retirement and health care coverage. it's really scary. we don't know what's coming down. i only want what i signed up for and put in my years for. >> negotiations continue between both sides with the help of an outside arbitrator. despite the expired contract, there are no plans to strike. despite accreditation returns san francisco is encouraging students to keep enrolling. the college spokesman said it lost 2,000 students over the past year amid growing concerns over the school's future. they have until march 15th to report back to the accrediting

commission. x-games owner espn is promising to conduct a safety review over the death of a snow mobile rider. caleb moore was attempting to do a back flip during the colorado event last week when his snow mobile landed on top of him. he did walk away from the crash with help but developed bleeding around his heart. this is the first death in an x- games competition. continuing our coverage of the super bowl 49er fans are stalking up. they have decorated their store with football balloons and banners. hot sellers includes tailgating staples like soda, beer, chips, and dip. >> chips and some cay sew and beer.

the fencing on the main street bridge over highway 17 as a symbol of love. the locks are a potential safety hazard. the removed locks will be stored at the los gatos yard until february 15th. the museum is creating a valentines day exhibit who people who want to display their locks. 4:48 is the time. sal, how is traffic? >> well, i'm keeping an eye on the roads and they are doing well. it's one of those things where you know it's kind of hoping the other shoe doesn't drop. it's looking good on 80 westbound. we all know in this business that things start off well but doesn't always stay that way. bay bridge toll plaza that looks good getting into san francisco. no problems getting across the bay into the city. if you are driving -- 280 also looks good on 101. we've had a couple bad days san jose this week. but right now is a good time to get out there. by the way, visibility and all

the traffic shots i can see here is good. so the fog is not a major issue. we'll ask steve about that right now. sal, you and i know it usually shows up like 6:00 to 8:00. a very quiet pattern. not a lot going on. today notice a lot of haze around the edges. hazy and warm. mostly sunny on weekend. higher clouds coming up to the southwest. i think it's mainly san jose south. next rain next thursday and friday. it looks like a colder system. don't let this sunny and warm weather fool you. you know colder weather will return it looks like end of next week. until then high pressure continues to move in. 30s and 40s on the temps. some temperatures probably dip down to near freezing. cloud and rain forecast. this will be saturday we'll see some of those. see how they stay more toward monterey and san jose south and

well as you drive through the coliseum area. the morning commute looks good on northbound 101 approaching the 80 split there are no major problems coming up. if you are drying on 101 -- driving on 101 that looks good. let's go to steve. thank you. we have mostly clear skies. a little bit of patchy fog will be around. more sunshine today. the first of february looks very, very nice as well. few high clouds will drift in here starting tomorrow. high pressure gives us a little bit offshore breeze. sunny and warm. mostly sunny on the weekend. a lot of those higher clouds look like they are taking aim. 30s and 40s on the temps. really nothing has changed. although the dew point is definitely up. some of the higher clouds you can see those starting to work their way in. by noon line looks about san francisco, oakland, concord, south. after that disappears high pressure will build back in for monday and tuesday. next hint of any rain will be next thursday. it looks like a colder system.
